What does if ed mean on a Nikon lens? ›

"ED means extra-low dispersion glass—it's an optical glass Nikon developed for correction of chromatic aberrations.

The G-type NIKKOR has no aperture ring; aperture should be selected from camera body. Nikon developed ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass to enable the production of lenses that offer superior sharpness and color correction by minimizing chromatic aberration.

Technical Specifications. ¹ This lens is compatible with D3000 series cameras from the D3300 onwards, D5000 series cameras from the D5200 onwards, and D7000 series cameras from the D7100 onwards. The D500 is also compatible. Please note that compatible cameras may require a firmware update.

DX lenses are designed to be used with cameras with crop-frame sensors, as opposed to FX lenses, which are designed to be used with full frame bodies. ED stands for Extra Low Dispersion Glass, which helps correct for chromatic aberrations. So DX is a format of lens, and ED is a lens feature.

Nikon's original ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass lenses effectively compensate for color fringing especially at high magnification. When observing white subjects such as swans or white eagles with an ordinary lens, a chromatic aberration is prominent at the border of the background and white part of the bird.

The FX sensor, with more "light gathering" area, offers higher sensitivity and, generally, lower noise. There is, of course, no crop factor present with the FX sensor with an FX or full frame lens.

The Nikkor 13mm f/5.6 is an ultra-wide angle rectilinear lens which was manufactured by Nikon for use on Nikon F mount cameras until 1998. It has been dubbed 'The Holy Grail', for its low-distortion ultra-wide capabilities.

Nikon DX refers to Nikon DSLR cameras that have an APS-C image sensor of 24×16 mm. As a result, the DX format is smaller than the standard 35mm format (approximately two-thirds).

AF-P lenses use a “Pulse” motor or “Stepping” autofocus motor and are even quieter and smoother to autofocus than an AF-S lens, making these lenses ideal when shooting video with a DSLR. The DSLR camera bodies that do feature a focus motor can utilize AF and AF-S lenses.

The zoom ring on the Nikkor 70-300mm is generously sized and the lens racks in and out smoothly and relatively quickly. This was key for shooting baseball because of the small size of the ball and the great distances that can occur between action on the field.

So, don't sell all your DX glass if you decide to go for full frame – you may find that the DX glass is useful on a FX body. But it varies a lot from lens to lens, so the best is if you can test your lenses with the camera body you plan to buy, so you know exactly how useful your DX glass is on the FX frame.
